Speech vs. Speech Rhetorical Analysis
Throughout the many speeches both Stalin and hitler have spoken, many are based on the same issue or topic. The Red Army Parade given by Stalin is very much similar to that of Hitler's speech declaring war on the United States. Both speeches deliver the audience the news of war against a specific country. In Hitler's case, he delivers a speech that informs and in a way persuades the audiences as to why Germany should and must declare war against the U.S. As for Stalin, he speaks of various reasons as to why it is necessary to fight Germany. Both Hitler and Stalin's goal through their is similar, but

Tovarishchi krasnoarmeytsy i Krasnogo Flota, komandiry i politrabotniki, rabochiye i rabotnitsy, kolkhozniki-muzhchin i zhenshchin, rabotnikov intelligentnykh professiy, brat'ya i sestry v tylu nashego vraga, vremenno popavshiye pod igo nemetskikh razboynikov, i nashi doblestnyye partizany i partizanki, razrushayushchiye tyly nemetskikh zakhvatchikov!
Ot imeni Sovetskogo pravitel'stva i nashey bol'shevistskoy partii privetstvuyu vas i pozdravlyayu Vas po dvadtsat' chetvertoy godovshchiny Velikoy Oktyabr'skoy sotsialisticheskoy revolyutsii.
Tovarishchi, eto v napryazhennykh usloviyakh, kotoryye my segodnya prazdnuyet dvadtsat' chetvertoy godovshchiny Oktyabr'skoy revolyutsii. Verolomnoye napadeniye nemetskikh razboynikov i voyna, kotoraya byla nam navyazana sozdali ugrozu dlya nashey strany. U nas yest' poteryali vremenno ryad oblastey, vrag okazalsya u vorot Leningrada i Moskvy. Vrag rasschityval, chto posle pervogo zhe udara nasha armiya budet rasseyana, i nasha strana budet postavlena na koleni. No vrag zhestoko proschitalsya. Nesmotrya na vremennyye neuspekhi, nasha armiya i flot geroicheski otbivaya ataki protivnika po vsemu frontu i nanosya tyazhelyye poteri na nego, v to vremya kak nasha strana, vsya nasha strana, organizovalas' v odnoy boyevoy lager', chtoby vmeste s nashey armiyey i Nash flot, chtoby okhvatit' razgrom nemetsko-fashistskikh zakhvatchikov.
Byli vremena, kogda nasha strana nakhodilas' v yeshche boleye tyazhelom polozhenii. Pomnite 1918 god, kogda my prazdnovali pervuyu godovshchinu Oktyabr'skoy revolyutsii. Tri chetverti nashey strany nakhodilis' v to vremya v rukakh inostrannykh interventov. Ukraina, . Kavkaz, Tsentral'naya Aziya, Ural, Sibir' i Dal'niy Vostok byli vremenno poteryany dlya nas u nas ne bylo soyuznikov, u nas ne bylo Krasnoy Armii, my ne tol'ko nachali sozdavat' yego, ne bylo nedostatka v pishche, vooruzheniya, odezhdy dlya armii. Chetyrnadtsat' gosudarstv nasedali na nashu stranu. No my ne unyvali, my ne unyvayem. V ogne voyny my kovali Krasnuyu Armiyu i prevratili nashu stranu v voyennyy lager'. Dukha I Lenin velikiy animirovannyye nas v to vremya dlya voyny protiv interventov. I chto zhe proizoshlo? My razbili interventov, vosstanovlennyye vsyu nashu poteryannuyu territoriyu i dobilis' pobedy.
Nynche polozheniye nashey strany namnogo luchshe, chem dvadtsat' tri goda nazad. Nasha strana seychas vo mnogo raz bogache, chem eto bylo dvadtsat' tri goda nazad v otnoshenii promyshlennosti, prodovol'stviya i syr'ya. Teper' u nas yest' soyuzniki, kotoryye vmeste s nam podderzhivayut yedinyy front protiv nemetskikh zakhvatchikov. Teper' naslazhdat'sya sochuvstviye i podderzhku vsekh narodov Yevropy, popavshikh pod igo gitlerovskoy tiranii. Teper' u nas yest' velikolepnyy armii i velikolepnyy temno-siniy, kotoryye zashchishchayut s ikh zhivet svobodu i nezavisimost' nashey strany. Vsya nasha strana, vse narody nashey strany, podderzhat' nashu armiyu, nash flot, pomogaya im razbit' vtorgshiyesya ordy Nemetskiye fashisty. Nashi lyudskiye rezervy moshchnosti neischerpayemy. Dukh velikogo Lenina i yego pobedonosnoye znamya ozhivit' nas seychas v etom Otechestvennoy voyny tak zhe, kak oni eto delali dvadtsat' tri goda nazad.
Mozhet li byt' nikakikh somneniy, chto my mozhem, i obyazany, pobedit' nemetskikh zakhvatchikov?
Vrag ne tak silen, kak nekotoryye pugali malen'kikh intellektualov predstavit' yego. Ne tak strashen chert strashen, kak yego malyuyut. Kto mozhet otritsat', chto nasha Krasnaya Armiya ne raz postavit' khvalenyye nemetskiye voyska panicheskoye begstvo? Yesli sudit', ne po khvastlivym zayavleniyam nemetskikh propagandistov, a po fakticheskomu polozheniyu Germanii, to eto ne budet trudno ponyat', chto nemetsko-fashistskiye zakhvatchiki stoyat pered katastrofoy goloda i nishchety pravleniye v Germanii v den' ;. za chetyre mesyatsa voyny Germaniya poteryal chetyre s polovinoy milliona chelovek; Germaniya istekayet krov'yu, yeye lyudskiye rezervy moshchnosti vydavaya, dukh vozmushcheniya rasprostranyayetsya ne tol'ko sredi narodov Yevropy, popavshikh pod igo nemetskikh zakhvatchikov, no i sredi Sami nemetskiye lyudi, kotoryye ne vidyat konets voyny. Nemetskiye zakhvatchiki napryagayut posledniye sily. Sushchestvuyet nikakikh somneniy, chto Germaniya ne mozhet vyderzhat' takuyu nagruzku dolgo.
Voyna, kotoruyu vy vedete, yest' voyna osvoboditel'naya, voyna spravedlivaya. Pust' muzhestvennyy obraz nashikh velikiye predki-Aleksandr Nevskiy, Dmitriy Donskoy, Kuz'ma Minin, Dmitriy Pozharskiy, Aleksandr Suvorov i Mikhail Kutuzov, vdokhnovlyayet vas v etoy voyne! Mozhet pobedonosnoye znamya velikogo Lenina dlya vas putevodnoy zvezdoy!
Dlya polnogo unichtozheniya nemetskikh zakhvatchikov!
Smert' nemetskim zakhvatchikam!
Da zdravstvuyet nasha slavnaya Rodina, yeye svoboda i yeye nezavisimost'!
Pod znamenem Lenina, vpered k pobede!
Red Army Parade Speech(English)-Joseph Stalin 1941
COMRADES, men of the Red Army and Red Navy, commanders and political instructors, working men and working women, collective farmers-men and women, workers in the intellectual professions, brothers and sisters in the rear of our enemy who have temporarily fallen under the yoke of the German brigands, and our valiant men and women guerillas who are destroying the rear of the German invaders!
On behalf of the Soviet Government and our Bolshevik Party I am greeting you and congratulating you on the twenty-fourth anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution.
Comrades, it is in strenuous circumstances that we are to-day celebrating the twenty-fourth anniversary of the October Revolution. The perfidious attack of the German brigands and the war which has been forced upon us have created a threat to our country. We have temporarily lost a number of regions, the enemy has appeared at the gates of Leningrad and Moscow. The enemy reckoned that after the very first blow our army would be dispersed, and our country would be forced to her knees. But the enemy gravely miscalculated. In spite of temporary reverses, our Army and Navy are heroically repulsing the enemy’s attacks along the entire front and inflicting heavy losses upon him, while our country—our entire country—has organized itself into one fighting camp in order, together with our Army and our Navy, to encompass the rout of the German invaders.
There were times when our country was in a still more difficult position. Remember the year 1918, when we celebrated the first anniversary of the October Revolution. Three-quarters of our country was at that time in the hands of foreign interventionists. The Ukraine, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Urals, Siberia and the Far East were temporarily lost to us. We had no allies, we had no Red Army—we had only just begun to create it; there was a shortage of food, of armaments, of clothing for the Army. Fourteen states were pressing against our country. But we did not become despondent, we did not lose heart. In the fire of war we forged the Red Army and converted our country into a military camp. The spirit of the great Lenin animated us at that time for the war against the interventionists. And what happened? We routed the interventionists, recovered all our lost territory, and achieved victory.
To-day the position of our country is far better than twenty-three years ago. Our country is now many times richer than it was twenty-three years ago as regards industry, food and raw materials. We now have allies, who together with us are maintaining a united front against the German invaders. We now enjoy the sympathy and support of all the nations of Europe who have fallen under the yoke of Hitler’s tyranny. We now have a splendid Army and a splendid Navy, who are defending with their lives the liberty and independence of our country. We experience no serious shortage of either food, or armaments or army clothing. Our entire country, all the peoples of our country, support our Army and our Navy, helping them to smash the invading hordes of German fascists. Our reserves of man-power are inexhaustible. The spirit of the great Lenin and his victorious banner animate us now in this patriotic war just as they did twenty-three years ago.
Can there be any doubt that we can, and are bound to(1), defeat the German invaders?
The enemy is not so strong as some frightened little intellectuals picture him. The devil is not so terrible as he is painted. Who can deny that our Red Army has more than once put the vaunted German troops to panic flight? If one judges, not by the boastful assertions of the German propagandists, but by the actual position of Germany(2), it will not be difficult to understand that the German-fascist invaders are facing disaster. Hunger and impoverishment reign in Germany to-day; in four months of war Germany has lost four and a half million men; Germany is bleeding, her reserves of man-power are giving out, the spirit of indignation is spreading not only among the peoples of Europe who have fallen under the yoke of the German invaders but also among the German people themselves, who see no end to war. The German invaders are straining their last efforts. There is no doubt that Germany cannot sustain such a strain for long. Another few months, another half-year, perhaps another year(3), and Hitlerite Germany must burst under the pressure of her crimes.
Comrades, men of the Red Army and Red Navy, commanders and political instructors, men and women guerillas, the whole world is looking to you as the force capable of destroying the plundering hordes of German invaders. The enslaved peoples of Europe who have fallen under the yoke of the German invaders look to you as their liberators. A great liberating mission has fallen to your lot. Be worthy of this mission! The war you are waging is a war of liberation, a just war. Let the manly images of our great ancestors—Alexander Nevsky, Dimitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin, Dimitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov—inspire you in this war! May the victorious banner of the great Lenin be your lodestar!
For the complete destruction of the German invaders!
Death to the German invaders!
Long live our glorious Motherland, her liberty and her independence!
Under the banner of Lenin, forward to victory!

OPVL
Delivered by Joseph Stalin on November 7, 1941, the Red Army Parade Speech was delivered to the Russian mass. The purpose of this speech was to inform the Russian population of the atrocious acts and damages the German soldiers were creating. The speech was given by Stalin in a way to persuade the Russian audience to fight back Germany because they were the ones that other countries were now looking up to. Stalin's main purpose through this speech was to encourage those of his country to realize that Germany was a threat to their country and that they were the world's last hope on defeating Hitler's tyrant ways. By doing so, Stalin's use of rhetoric devices helped support his claim and gain the audience's approval. Considering the origin and purpose, the Red Army Parade Speech varies of different values. To start it off, one of the speech's main value would have to be that the speech helps exemplify the type of person Stalin was and helps determine the various techniques he would use in order to gain influence from the Russian people. To the historian's advantage, the speech indicates the position held by Russia during World War II and where the country stood during this time period. Aside from that, the speech also provides us with the type of writing format and techniques Stalin utilized to gain the large amount of influence and support he had. Lastly, the speech's limitations would be that Stalin's didn't give too much specifics of what Germany was up to. Although he did indicate Germany's actions, Stalin didn't go into depth. Also, Stalin claims that Germany is not as strong as people believe, however he doesn't provide examples or much detail of why he believes so. In a way to much repetition would relate to the limitation stated before, since Stalin tends to repeat of Germany's losing strength put fails to imply why.

Adolf Hitler
Declaring War on the United States (German)- Adolf Hitler 1941
(Beginn Abschnitt)
[ertranken in Applaus] .... (Ziffer 53)
(Ende Abschnitt)
[ertranken in Applaus] .... (Ziffer 53)

(Abs. 63)

Declaring War on the United States Speech (English) - Adolf Hitler 1941
(Beginning Section)
Deputies, Men of the German Reichstag! A year of events of historical significance is drawing to an end. A year of the greatest decisions lies ahead. In these serious times, I speak to you, Deputies of the German Reichstag, as to the representatives of the German nation. Beyond and above that, the whole German people should take note of this glance into the past, as well as of the coming decisions the present and future impose upon us. (para. 1)
After the renewed refusal of my peace offer in January 1940 by the then British Prime Minister and the clique which supported or else dominated him, it became clear that this war-against all reasons of common, sense and necessity-must be fought to its end. You know me, my old Party companions: you know I have always been an enemy of half measures or weak decisions. If the Providence has so willed that the German people cannot be spared this fight, then I can only be grateful that it entrusted me with the leadership in this historic struggle which, for the next 500 or 1,000 years, will be described as decisive, not only for the history of Germany, but for the whole of Europe and indeed the whole world. The German people and their soldiers are working and fighting today, not only for the present, but for the coming, nay the most distant, generations. A historical revision on a unique scale has been imposed on us by the Creator. (para 2)
Shortly after the end of the campaign in Norway, the German Command was forced, first of all, to ensure the military security of the conquered areas. Since then the defences of the conquered countries have changed considerably. From Kirkenes to the Spanish Frontier there is a belt of great bases and fortifications; many airfields have been built, naval bases and protections for submarines which are practically invulnerable from sea or air. More than 1,500 new batteries have been planned and constructed. A network of roads and railways was constructed so that today communications from the Spanish Frontier to Petsamo are independent of the sea. These installations in no wise fall behind those of the Western Wall, and work continues incessantly on strengthening them. I am irrevocably determined to make the European Front unassailable by any enemy...(para 3)
(Middle Section)
...So far as Germany's attitude towards America is concerned, I have to state: (i) Germany is perhaps the only great power which has never had a colony either in North or South America, or otherwise displayed there any political activity, unless mention be made of the emigration of many millions of Germans and of their work, which, however, has only been to the benefit of the American Continent and of the U.S.A. (ii) In the whole history of the coming into being and of the existence of the U.S.A. the German Reich has never adopted a politically unfriendly, let alone hostile attitude, but, on the contrary with the blood of many of its sons, it helped to defend the U.S.A. The German Reich never took part in any war against the U.S.A. It itself had war imposed upon it by the U.S.A. in 1917, and then for reasons which have been thoroughly revealed by an investigation committee set up by President Roosevelt himself. There are no other differences between the German and the American people, either territorial or political, which could possibly touch the interests let alone the existence of the U.S.A. There was always a difference of constitution, but that cannot be a reason for hostilities so long as the one state does not try to interfere with the other. America is a Republic, a Democracy, and today is a Republic under strong authoritative leadership. The ocean lies between the two States. The divergences between Capitalist America and Bolshevik Russia, if such conceptions had any truth in them, would be much greater than between America led by a President and Germany led by a Führer. (para. 31)
But it is a fact that the two conflicts between Germany and the U.S.A. were inspired by the same force and caused by two men in the U.S.A.-Wilson and Roosevelt. History has already passed its verdict on Wilson, his name stands for one of the basest breaches of the given word, that led to disruption not only among the so-called vanquished, but also among the victors. This breach of his word alone made possible the Dictate of Versailles. We know today that a group of interested financiers stood behind Wilson and made use of this paralytic professor because they hoped for increased business. The German people have had to pay for having believed this man with the collapse of their political and economic existence....(para 32)
...I will pass over the insulting attacks made by this so-called President against me. That he calls me a gangster is uninteresting. After all, this expression was not coined in Europe but in America, no doubt because such gangsters are lacking here. Apart from this, I cannot be insulted by Roosevelt for I consider him mad just as Wilson was. I don't need to mention what this man has done for years in the same way against Japan. First he incites war then falsifies the causes, then odiously wraps himself in a cloak of Christian hypocrisy and slowly but surely leads mankind to war, not without calling God to witness the honesty of his attack-in the approved manner of an old Freemason. I think you have all found it a relief that now, at last, one State has been the first to take the step of protest against his historically unique and shame less ill-treatment of truth, and of right-which protest this man has desired and about which he cannot complain. The fact that the Japanese Government, which has been negotiating for year with this man, has at last become tired of being mocked by him in such an unworthy way, fills us all, the German people, and think, all other decent people in the world, with deep satisfaction. (para. 50)
We have seen what the Jews have done in Soviet Russia. We have made the acquaintance of the Jewish Paradise on earth. Millions of German soldiers have been able to see this country where the international Jews have destroyed people and property. The President of the U.S.A. ought finally to understand-I say this only because of his limited intellect-that we know that the aim of this struggle is to destroy one State after another. But the present German Reich has nothing more in common with the old Germany. And we, for our part, will now do what this provocateur has been trying to do so much for years. Not only because we are the ally of Japan, but also because Germany and Italy have enough insight and strength to comprehend that, in these historic times, the existence or non-existence of the nations, is being decided perhaps for ever. We clearly see the intention of the rest of the world towards us. They reduced Democratic Germany to hunger. They would exterminate our social things of today. When Churchill and Roosevelt state that they want to build up a new social order, later on, it is like a hairdresser with a bald head recommending an unfortunate hair-restorer. These men, who live in the most socially backward states, have misery and distress enough in their own countries to occupy themselves with the distribution of foodstuffs. (para. 51)
As for the German nation, it needs charity neither from Mr. Churchill nor from Mr. Roosevelt, let alone from Mr. Eden. It wants only its rights! It will secure for itself this right to life even if thousands of Churchills and Roosevelts conspire against it.(para. 52)
In the whole history of the German nation, of nearly 2,000 years, it has never been so united as today and, thanks to National Socialism it will remain united in the future. Probably it has never seen so clearly, and rarely been so conscious of its honour. I have therefore arranged for his passports to be handed to the American Chargé d'Affaires today, and the following ... [drowned in applause].... (para 53)
(End Section)
...The Three Powers have therefore concluded the following Agreement, which was signed in Berlin today: (para. 55)
"In their unshakable determination not to lay down arms until the joint war against the U.S.A. and England reaches a successful conclusion, the German, Italian, and Japanese Governments have agreed on the following points:(para. 56)
Article I. Germany, Italy and Japan will wage the common war forced upon them by the U.S.A. and England with all the means of power at their disposal, to a victorious conclusion. (para. 57)
Article II. Germany, Italy and Japan undertake not to conclude an armistice or peace with the U.S.A. or with England without complete mutual understanding. (para. 58)
Article III. Germany, Italy and Japan will continue the closest cooperation even after the victorious conclusion of the war in order to bring about a just new order in the sense of the Tri-Partite Pact concluded by them on the 27th September 1940. (para. 59)
Article IV. This Agreement comes into force immediately after signature and remains in force as long as the Tri-Partite Pact of 27th September 1940. The Signatory Powers will confer in time before this period ends about the future form of the co-operation provided for in Article III of this Agreement."(para. 60)
...Today I am at the head of the strongest Army in the world, the most gigantic Air Force and of a proud Navy. Behind and around me stands the Party with which I became great and which has become great through me. The enemies I see before me are the same enemies as 20 years ago, but the path along which I look forward cannot be compared with that on which I look back. The German people recognizes the decisive hour of its existence millions of soldiers do their duty, millions of German peasants and workers, women and girls, produce bread for the home country and arms for the Front. We are allied with strong peoples, who in the same need are faced with the same enemies. The American President and his Plutocratic clique have mocked us as the Have-nots-that is true, but the Have-nots will see to it that they are not robbed of the little they have.(para. 61)
You, my fellow party members, know my unalterable determination to carry a fight once begun to its successful conclusion. You know my determination in such a struggle to be deterred by nothing, to break every resistance which must be broken. In September 1939 I assured you that neither force, nor arms, nor time would overcome Germany. I will assure my enemies that neither force of arms nor time nor any internal doubts, can make us waver in the performance of our duty. When we think of the sacrifices of our soldiers, any sacrifice made by the Home Front is completely unimportant. When we think of those who in past centuries have fallen for the Reich, then we realize the greatness of our duty. But anybody who tries to evade this duty has no claim to be regarded in our midst as a fellow German. Just as we were unmercifully hard in our struggle for power we shall be unmercifully hard in the struggle to maintain our nation. (para. 62)
At a time when thousands of our best men are dying nobody must expect to live who tries to depreciate the sacrifices made at the Front. Immaterial under what camouflage he tries to disturb this German Front, to undermine the resistance of our people, to weaken the authority of the regime, to sabotage the achievements of the Home Front, he shall die for it! But with the difference that this sacrifice brings the highest honour to the soldier at the Front, whereas the other dies dishonoured and disgraced. (para. 63)
Our enemies must not deceive themselves-in the 2,000 years of German history known to us, our people have never been more united than today. The Lord of the Universe has treated us so well in the past years that we bow in gratitude to a providence which has allowed us to be members of such a great nation. We thank Him that we also can be entered with honour into the ever-lasting book of German history! (para 64)

(para 64)
OPVL
The Declaration of War on the United States Speech was given by Adolf Hitler on December 11, 1941. In this speech the German leader recounted the reasons for the outbreak of war in September 1939, explained why he decided to strike against the Soviet Union in June 1941, reviewed the dramatic course of the war, and dealt at length with President Franklin Roosevelt's hostile policies toward Germany. Hitler detailed the hostile actions of Roosevelt's government, and then dramatically announced that Germany was now joining Japan in war against the United States. Hitler claims that the United States is a threat to German and their history. Hitler delivers his speech with much pride and intends to inform the German mass of the real intentions behind the United States and its president. By doing so, Hitler speaks with great confidence and pride and uses rhetoric devices to gain influence from the German population. Considering the origin and purpose, the values of this speech would include of many. First of all, the speech provides historians with evidence of Hitler's intentions against the United Sates during this period. It helps determine the kind of relationship these two countries had during WWII. Aside form relationships, the speech helps determine the position the Germany stood in as a country during World War II. Aside from determining the country's condition during 1941, the speech also suggest the type of person Hitler was as a person and dictator, as well as the strategies and methods Hitler utilized to gain the huge amount of influence he had. As for limitations, the speech extends much further than the amount I provided. Whether true or not, Hitler's speech notes his detailed justifications for his fateful decisions, adding to the values of the speech The speech goes on to reach a full 88 minutes. Unlike Stalin, Hitler really goes into depth with what he is talking about. However there are limitations as too how long a speech must be until the audience loses interest or forgets what your purpose is. Instead Hitler should have kept the speech short, but enough to cover the topic in depth. Besides the speech's length, Hitler kept the speech simple and straight-forward, but extremely detailed.

Rhetoric Analysis
Throughout both Hitler and Stalin's dictatorship, both were able to gain an enormous amount of followers. One of their many strategies to gain such influence were throughout their speeches. Their sense of persuasion and self-belief were delivered through their voices. The usage of rhetoric devices is obvious once you analyze the speech in depth. When reading through one of Stalin's many speeches, (the Red Army Parade Speech delivered in 1941 in particular), as well as one of Hitler's (Declaration on the United States), the usage of rhetoric devices become apparent. Although Hitler and Stalin used many of the same rhetoric devices, they also utilized different ones and were able to use them differently. Overall, it turns out that Hitler's and Stalin's speech contain more similarities than differences.
Similarities
To begin his speech, Stalin follows the usual apposition device, which introduces his audience and identifies the people he intends to send his message to. His usual, "COMRADES, men of the Red Army and Red Navy, commanders and political instructors, working men and working women, collective farmers-men and women, workers in the intellectual professions, brothers and sisters"(red) phrase tends to be included in his intro, as well as his conclusive remark. The purpose of doing this helps enforce the reminder that Stalin is speaking to all, whether rich or poor, soldier or farmer, Stalin wants the audience to know that he stands for all and speaks for all. Unlike Stalin, Hitler's utilization of apposition is different since he is only directing the speech to his fellow deputies. Hitler's common, "I speak to you, Deputies of the German Reichstag" phrase is implied in both the intro and conclusion very much like Stalin. Aside from apposition, Stalin and Hitler use the rhetoric device, parenthesis, a couple of times throughout their speech. Their usage of this devices helps explain and qualify their sentence. The rhetoric phrase isn't required, but is included to give extra explanation or qualification. Unlike Stalin, Hitler uses the rhetoric device a number amount of times more than Stalin. Both Hitler's and Stalin's usage of parenthesis is similar, which is to add an extra phrase or so to provide more detail. Through analyzing Hitler's speeches I've come to conclude that parenthesis is the most commonly used rhetoric device in Hitler's declaration to the United States Speech. Used by both Hitler and Stalin, asyndeton occurs in both speeches. Spoken by Stalin, "We routed the interventionists, recovered all our lost territory, and achieved victory"(peach), the purpose of this rhetoric device allows a more short, clear, and straight-forward response, allowing the audience to catch on to what Hitler or Stalin where saying. Lastly, both Stalin and Hitler use climax. While Stalin uses it in the phrase, "For the complete destruction of the German invaders! Death to the German invaders! Long live our glorious Motherland, her liberty and her independence! Under the banner of Lenin, forward to victory!"(green), and hitler utilizes climax in the phrase, "to undermine the resistance of our people, to weaken the authority of the regime, to sabotage the achievements of the Home Front, he shall die for it!"(green), they both utilize this rhetoric device to provide intense, pride, and confidence. Although used in different ways, both interpret the same meaning. Both Stalin and Hitler emphasize pride and belief in their country and goal.
Differences
Throughout Stalin's and HItler's speeches, I noted that like their usage of the same rhetoric devices, their use of rhetoric devices also vary. Unlike Hitler, Stalin makes use of the rhetoric device, anaphora. Stalin's phrase"But we did not become despondent, we did not lose heart"(blue) his usage of this device helps send a wave of confidence and determination. Another rhetoric device Stalin used that Hitler didn't was hyperbole. By intending to explain the near collapsing of Germany, Stalin expressess it through the hyperbole,"Germany is bleeding". By explaining the enclosing breakdown of Germany through a sense of figure of speech, he was able to heighten effect and express exaggeration. Similar to a hyperhole but not quite, Hitler used a simile. Hitler demonstrates the implausible and irrational attempts of Roosevelt and Churchill to build a new social order, by comparing Roosevelt's and Churchill's attempts to "a hairdresser with a bald head recommending an unfortunate hair-restorer"(purple). The figure of speech allows a comparison between the two situations and provide a similar resemblance. Hitler also provides a polyptoton in his speech when mentioning, "to break every resistance which must be broken", providing the same root word, break. Hitler also took to use antimetabole. In Hitler's words, "highest honour to the soldier at the Front, whereas the other dies dishonoured and disgraced"(light brown), Hitler allows the repetition of words in reverse grammatical order. This allows the contrasting between one who sacrifices themselves to their country and dies with pride, whereas those who die dishonored and disgraced because of their denial to defend their country. Lastly, Hitler utilizes isocon, in his statement, "America is a Republic, a Democracy, and today is a Republic under strong authoritative leadership"(green), to imply and define the meaning to "Republic", or particularly "America's Republic".
